Institute of Experimental and Technological Biology (iBET)
The new building of the Institute of Experimental and Technological Biology (iBET) enhances the scientific hub of this leading research organisation, dedicated to cutting-edge technologies and platforms for the development of Biopharmaceuticals, Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), and Vaccines. Positioned to the west and north of the pre-existing building—also designed by Gonçalo Byrne, in collaboration with António Reis Cabrita, three decades ago (1992)—the new facility integrates harmoniously into the campus, reinforcing its identity and mission.
Designed as a “mirror” of the original structure, the new building echoes its geometry and volume, emphasising programmatic continuity while asserting its own autonomy. The two structures are connected by a passageway and a landscaped garden, forming a shared courtyard that serves as a focal point for interaction. Within this courtyard lies the cafeteria, a transparent, light-filled space that opens onto a terrace. The cafeteria fosters moments of relaxation and social engagement, promoting active use of the garden and encouraging collaboration and synergy among the teams.
The building comprises two interconnected volumes sharing a common underground level: one volume, oriented towards the main street, houses multiple laboratories and their associated functional areas, while the other accommodates Clean Rooms, meticulously designed to meet stringent requirements. While each activity imposes distinct programmatic demands, they share essential design features, including the strategic arrangement and proximity of specific spaces, optimised thermal quality, controlled natural lighting, aseptic conditions in adjoining areas, and seamless control over the movement of people and materials.
The laboratory volume is designed with a central core that consolidates access points and internal service spaces, allowing the perimeter along all four façades to be dedicated to areas that benefit most from optimal natural light, which is thoughtfully regulated. This design adopts a flexible framework, enabling the space to adapt to future transformations while preserving the overall coherence and integrity of the building.
The façades express the modular regularity of the interior layout, with a uniform composition across all four elevations. To meet the functional needs of spaces adjacent to the façade, expansive glazed openings are slightly elevated above the interior floor level, while recessed suspended ceilings allow natural light to penetrate deeper into the building, creating a bright, comfortable, and inviting environment.
The façade design further enhances the building’s aesthetic and functional qualities through the interplay of varied cladding textures and alternating planes—some projecting outward, others recessed. This thoughtful arrangement introduces dynamic visual effects, offering changing perceptions of depth, brightness, transparency, and rhythm, which contribute to the building’s striking architectural identity.
